Improval Record: Information for practices
This page outlines how your practice can support GP Registrars in using the Improval app safely and compliantly for video-based training and supervision.
📋 Purpose of the App
Improval enables GP Registrars to record short consultation videos with patient consent. These are used for self-reflection, supervisor feedback, and optional AI analysis. Videos are uploaded securely and deleted from the device after upload.
🛡️ Data Protection & Consent
- Patients must give consent (signed or verbal & recorded) before the consultation is recorded.
- The consent form should be stored if written.
- Patients can withdraw consent at any time by contacting the practice.
- Videos are retained only while educationally useful, then deleted.
- They are scheduled for deletion after 3 months by default but this can be extended.
🔐 Security Measures
- Videos are stored temporarily in the app's private storage and are not visible in the Photos app or iCloud.
- They are not encrypted locally, so the device must be protected with a passcode or biometric security.
- All uploads go to a secure server in the UK and are encrypted.
- Access is restricted to the registrar and their invited supervisor(s), with 2FA on the web portal.
📦 What Practices Should Do
- Encourage registrars to follow best practice for consent and security.
- Ensure consent forms are properly stored.
- Consider referencing Improval in your practice’s DPIA register.
- Support registrars in understanding their data protection obligations.
